It's great for advanced users but it can break sandboxing and it breaks on non local installs, etc. Ultimately I wouldn't want to recommend it. That said one could probably reimplement it using safe client side APIs, and that would likely change my opinion.

I would like to rearchitect this extension so that you can simply pick a folder on you computer with a native file picker(this would also make it work well on PAWS and other remote installations).

It would in the background "upload" the to the OpenRefine workspace as you create your project, this way the extension wouldn't need access to your actual computer. It would however, require work both here and in the Wikibase extension as that holds most of the Wikimedia Commons logic.
