Code style and code formatting tool

What kind of code style should be followed in mate projects? GNU, Linux or k&r? Have any code style document for mate-desktop?

There are some code formatting tools, such as indent, clang-format, astyle and so on. Can use one of these tools to unify the code style? If possible, include a .indent. pro, .clang-format or .astylerc file in source tree so that patch submitters can check their code style first.

I prefer to use only spaces in new code if possible.

I've traditionally always preferred spaces. Lately, however, I've started appreciating smart tabs (tabs for indentation, spaces for alignment). I'm fine with either of these (but not just tabs, I think that's awful).
I think there are other questions too, like where do you put the { } brackets, same line or new line? Where do we break long list of function parameters or chained conditionals, etc.
In any case, I'm not highly opinionated here: I'll happily follow whatever convention the current file has, as long as it's readable

I normally follow the pattern set by the rest of the file being worked on unless the file itself is a mishmash. In that case I follow the pattern set by adjacent code blocks or neighboring lines
