I'm guessing the substitution 'sup' => 'what is up' is causing this issue

I suggest you surround your expand and contract regexes with word boundary checks, eg.

this._expandRegexp = new RegExp('\\b('+keys.join('|')+')\\b', 'gi');

or similar
