. The ESP32 has a number of so-called strapping pins. The best known is GPIO0, which controls the boot state and is used when flashing the ESP32. GPIO12 is another strapping pin and can cause boot problems when the applied voltage change during boot. In this (rather old) forum item this is explained: https://www.esp32.com/viewtopic.php?t=5970
